Five Ways to Treat your Knee Pain

The knee is a large and complex joint crucial for movement. Protecting knee joints is important as they enable various activities while bearing the body's weight. It's one of the joints most susceptible to pain, injury, and various forms of arthritis. If we live long enough, most of us will experience knee problems at some point. However, there are ways to minimize the impact of knee problems. Practising a healthy lifestyle and good body mechanics may even help reduce the risk of their development and progression.


Try these tips for healthy knees.

1. Get moving. Your joints were designed for movement. Regular physical activity can help your knees and other joints in several ways, including: Relieving pain and stiffness strengthens the muscles that provide support to the knees reducing weight gain that puts excess stress on the knees and improving balance to decrease your risk of falls and injuries to the knees and other joints. Physical therapy for knee arthritis can help keep your knees functioning at their best.


2. Maintain a healthy weight. Being overweight puts extra stress on your knees, leading to more cartilage wear and pain. Research shows that for people with knee osteoarthritis, losing weight can help. In one study, overweight or obese adults who lost 20% or more of their body weight reported less pain and improved mobility. Maintaining a healthy weight is essential for keeping your joints healthy.


3. Protect knees from injury. Injury to an arthritic knee can cause further damage, and injury to a healthy knee may lead to arthritis. To protect your knees, avoid activities involving repetitive pounding, pivoting, or high risk of injury. It's crucial to listen to your body and rest if you experience joint pain.
When lifting heavy objects, use your largest joints and muscles, hold items close to your body, and slide objects when possible. Consider wearing a knee brace during certain activities, but consult a physical therapist for advice.


4. Treat injuries promptly. If you do injure a knee or other joint, reduce swelling and promote healing by practising RICE (rest, ice, compression and elevation):

➡️Painful knee should be treated by applying a cold pack or ice wrapped in a towel for 20 mins many times a day.
➡️Wrap an elastic bandage securely around the injured knee to reduce swelling.
➡️Recline with your leg placed on a pillow to keep your knee elevated above your heart as often as you can.
If your pain is severe, you can’t bend or bear weight on your knee or the pain doesn’t improve after a few days, speak with your doctor.


5. Pay attention to pain. If you have new or increased joint pain, talk to your doctor. It could be a sign of injury or disease activity. Find treatments that work for you, such as medication, supplements, hot/cold therapy, splints/braces, and relaxation techniques.
